Getting to Know: Senior Attackman Max Leonard

I sat down with one of the Colorado Lacrosse's newest members. Although Max may be new to the team, he has probably played lacrosse for longer than most of the readers of this interview. Click below the picture of Max at Vail, for his interview.

We’re both from Michigan where the Greek food scene is unbeatable, have you been able to find something comparable here in Boulder?
I've been in Boulder now for 4 years and have not been at all disappointed with the fare available. Whether its a breakfast sandwich at Salvaggios, a greasy, cheap plate at the Village Coffee Shop, or a spicy, delicious curry bowl at Khow Thai, Boulder has more than its share of great meal options. There are times when I could go for a coney, however.

You are the second Leonard to come through The University of Colorado and its lacrosse program, what is it about Boulder and C.U. that attracts the Leonard clan?
The lure of the mountains, and the sheer beauty of Boulder has had no small part in bringing us out here and keeping us coming back. The 300 days of sunshine a year have also helped. Leonards in general love the outdoors, and Boulder is an ideal outdoor destination.

Although you are a senior, this is your first year playing lacrosse at CU, what made you decide to get back on the field?
Ive been interested in playing the last couple of years, but once attending meetings and in last year’s case actually trying out I decided that I couldn’t commit myself physically as well as mentally to the extent I find necessary to compete at a high level. And I didn’t care too much for the old head coach. Thus far, this season has been all that I could ask for and more. I look forward to the remaining practices and games with an eager hunger for the possibilities our team can accomplish.

As stated above, this is your senior year, what are your plans after graduation?
My post-graduation plans are as of yet unsubstantiated. Tentatively, I have applied to return to France where I spent a semester abroad and teach English to young French students. My pending acceptance will be decided by April. If that falls through, my plans become increasingly more tentative. In some fashion I’d like to combine my love of the outdoors with a life-long interest in cooking. As far as exactly where that will take me, time will tell.

You live in the unofficial “lacrosse house” What is it like?
Unfortunately, there are times when the “lacrosse house” feels like a frat house. The list of broken and missing things as a result of parties is certainly longer than I would care to mention, but all in all, I do love lacrosse, and can’t completely berate the “lacrosse house.” Just tell Snyder to clean up his shit every once in a while.

We went to Vail a couple of weeks ago, it was epic, Can I count you in for the next powder day?
Yes, please.

Who are your 5 favorite musicians?
In no particular order: Radiohead, The Beatles, The White Stripes, Pavement, Elliott Smith

Upcoming concert you’re excited for?
Hmm, nothing in the near term that I’m specifically looking forward to.

Hiking or Skiing?
In terms of quantity, I’ll go hiking multiple times a week. For quality, you can’t beat a powder day of skiing.

Volkswagen or Audi?
Audi

What would you like to say to the readers of this interview? Any advice for teammates?
I would like to say that I’m extremely excited for this season. I think we’ve got a great group of talented players and genuinely funny, good people. I appreciate the guys accepting me into the group quickly and I want the team to know that I’m here to win, and look forward to doing so. Lacrosse was all I knew from 3rd grade through my senior year in high school, and it might take me the next month or two to get my legs and my stick back to where they once were, but I’m not here for the gear and the girls. Let’s go kick some ass.
